It has been almost a year and a half since "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew" were introduced to Parow Centre shoppers and children, and the Kids Club has grown from 915 to over 1 400 members during this time.
History behind "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew"
When Parow Centre was bought over by Basfour 2295 Pty (Ltd) it was decided that along with a new name, the centre was also in need of a new Kids Club mascot. The idea was to try and incorporate the existing mascots Percy the Frog, Pam the Fairy and Patrick and Patricia the Penguins, into a group of themed characters to be associated with the new Parow Centre Kids Club. Parow Centre Kids Club members were introduced to "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew" during their June school holidays in 2006. They were invited to a live theatrical production to see how Jacob, a cleaner at the Parow Zoo, was transformed along with his animal friends into "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew."
Why Captain Parow?
Parow Centre's very own superhero, Captain Parow, is actually based on the 'real' Captain Parow. But who was the 'real' Captain Parow and why did we want to name our mascot after him? During 1865, Captain Johann Parow and his ship, the Kehrwieder, were stranded in the Table Bay Harbour after a great storm. After spending some time in the Cape of Good Hope, he settled down and married Johanna Timmerman, daughter of the family who assisted him after being stranded on the Cape coast. He quickly realised the potential value of the Tyger Valley area north of Cape Town and that it held great opportunities for cattle trade. He soon moved inland to this area and started selling ground - ground which is today known as Parow.
A statue of Captain Parow can be found at the Parow Civic Centre.
Captain Parow Theatrical Productions
"Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew" have visited Parow Centre twice last year - the first time during January for a back-to-school production and the second time during June for the 'Captain Parow defeats the Ice Queen' show.
"Kaptein Parow en die Lelike Lummel"
On Saturday, 13 January and again on Monday, 15 January, Parow Centre hosted a back-to-school production by "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew". The very first Afrikaans show, called "Kaptein Parow en die Lelike Lummel", took place from 12:00 to 12:30 in the Markham Promotions Court. A giant puzzle-mat was provided for children to sit on.
The theme of the show centred around the importance of education and was depicted in a humorous manner. To further build on the back-to-school theme, reward loyal members of the Kids Club and increase footcount to the centre, all Kids Club Members were invited to return the letters that were posted to them to receive a free "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew'" lunchbox, just in time for the start of a brand-new school year!! During the same period, children who weren't already members, were invited to join the Parow Centre Kids Club. Each new member was given a registration form to complete and in return received a free "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew" fridge magnet.
Captain Parow defeats the Ice Queen
"Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew" had their one year anniversary during July and celebrated it by hosting another entertaining theatrical production in the Markham Promotions Court. As it was during the winter school holidays, the show was about how Parow Centre's own superhero, Captain Parow, who always takes his vitamins and dresses warmly during the cold winter months, defeated the evil Ice Queen, whose goal was to make all the residents of Parow sick with colds and flu. Once again Captain Parow showed us that good always triumphs over evil, and by taking our vitamins, we can easily overcome winter without catching a cold. Other characters were the delightful Patrick and Patricia the Penguins and Pam the Fairy. Parow Centre Kids Club members all received a posted letter inviting them to the performance which took place during the school holidays on Wednesday, 11 and Saturday, 14 July. All members who remembered to bring the tear-off sheet at the bottom of their letter were also treated to a free tub of "Captain Parow & the Zoo Crew" aroma dough. While moulding and playing with this fantastic winter gift, a refreshing blend of Naartjie, Neroli and other essential oils fills the air and clears away any sniffles. |
